Biography
The image venerated at the shrine is that of the Dead Christ, affectionately called “Lolo Uweng”—a name derived from “Emmanuel Salvador del Mundo” (Emmanuel Savior of the World). According to tradition, the image was discovered by fishermen along the lakeshore after possibly being set adrift by its creator or owner, or washed ashore during a severe storm. There are legends of an old man, introducing himself as Emmanuel Salvador del Mundo, inviting visitors to see his home near the acacia trees of Landayan, only for them to realize that his “home” was the church itself. The old man’s appearance is said to bear a striking resemblance to the image of Lolo Uweng, further deepening the mystique and devotion surrounding the icon.
