Portrait of St. Barnabas The Apostle
St. Barnabas The Apostle

Biography

St. Barnabas, originally named Joseph, was a Jewish Levite from Cyprus and one of the Seventy Apostles chosen by Jesus. He sold his property and gave the proceeds to the early Christian community in Jerusalem, earning the name Barnabas, meaning "son of consolation" for his gift of comforting others. He played a key role in the early Church by encouraging the acceptance of Paul the Apostle and bringing him to Antioch, where they taught together and undertook missionary journeys, spreading Christianity to Gentiles. Barnabas is traditionally believed to have preached in Cyprus and other regions before being martyred by stoning around the year.
